On May 14, 2020, the Lancaster Delegation voted in support of county commissioners, a day after the commissioners unanimously approved re-opening efforts.
As Pennsylvania's unemployment statistics continue to rise and the COVID-19 curve flattens, the House of Representatives sent a plan to the Governor's desk. This plan would allow counties to develop and implement their own COVID-19 mitigation plans for businesses.
"Our letter to Governor Wolf asked him to move our county from 'red' to 'yellow', and our Lancaster County commissioners moved forward with their plan to do just that this week by voting unanimously to approve plans for expanded testing, economic recovery, and assisting nursing homes," House Majority Leader Bryan Cutler (R-Peach Bottom) stated. "Those important steps show the Governor our commissioners are making bipartisan strides to help our residents, and our House vote today shows our local leaders they are not acting alone."
The response allows a county’s governing body to develop its own COVID-19 mitigation plan tailored to its unique circumstances. The plan must be created in consultation with county health and emergency management officials.
"Business owners and their employees are growing more frustrated by the day, and now we are learning some waivers have been revoked," Rep. Keith Greiner (R-Upper Leacock) remarked. "Allowing counties to make their own decisions is in the best interest of public health, both physical and mental, and we encourage the Governor to sign SB 327 into law."
