The National Park Service has decided against removing the statue of William Penn from its location at Waterfront Park in Philadelphia. This decision comes after significant public opposition to the initial proposal.

Rep. Dave Zimmerman, representing Lancaster and Berks counties, expressed his views on the situation through a column. In his writing, he compared the controversy surrounding William Penn's statue to a previous incident involving Bud Light's advertising campaign featuring trans TikTok personality Dylan Mulvaney. The campaign faced backlash due to customer disapproval.

Zimmerman criticized Alissa Heinerscheid, who was behind the Bud Light campaign and is an alumna of the University of Pennsylvania's Wharton School. He questioned whether elite institutions like Harvard University, MIT, and UPenn instill ideologies that contribute to societal division.

He further linked this criticism to actions by Marilou Ehrler, an NPS Historical Architect with ties to Columbia University, suggesting that educational backgrounds influence decisions like the proposed removal of historical statues.

Zimmerman highlighted William Penn's historical significance as a proponent of equality and religious freedom before America's founding. He argued that attempts to remove such figures from history undermine foundational values.

Referencing historical events like the Taliban's destruction of Buddha statues in 2001, Zimmerman warned against erasing history for ideological reasons. Despite current assurances from the NPS not to remove Penn’s statue, Zimmerman suggested vigilance against future attempts driven by what he described as "woke ideology."

Representative Dave Zimmerman's full commentary reflects his concerns about preserving historical truth amidst cultural shifts influenced by higher education institutions.
